Starting a report
From the Home tab, tap any template card to open a new report. FieldReportX pre-fills the report with the sections and fields defined in the template — nothing is saved until you tap Save or Save & Preview PDF.
Filling in fields
Each field works a bit differently depending on its type:
- Text — tap and type. Supports long multi-line entries.
- Number / Counter / Measurement — tap and enter a value. Counter fields use a +/− stepper.
- Slider — drag the handle to set a value within the range configured in the template.
- Date / Time — tap the button to open the device date or time picker.
- Time Range — enter a start and end time. Elapsed hours are calculated automatically.
- Dropdown — tap to open the picker and select one option from the list defined in the template.
- Radio Buttons — all options are shown at once. Tap one to select it.
- Checklist — tap items to check or uncheck them.
- Checkbox + Text — tap the checkbox to mark the item, then type a note alongside it. The label is optional.
- Checkbox Summary — read-only. Automatically shows every Checkbox + Text item in the report with its checked or unchecked state.
- Yes / No — toggle between Yes and No.
- Rating — tap a star to set the rating.
- Camera — tap to open the live camera, capture a photo, then optionally draw on it before saving.
- Multi-Photo Camera — same as Camera, but allows multiple photos per field.
- Upload Image — pick one or more photos from your device gallery.
- Signature — sign with your finger on the pad.
- Voice to Text — tap the microphone and speak. Your words are added to the field as you talk — you can also type directly.
- Drawing — draw freehand on a blank, grid, or dot canvas.
- Barcode / QR — tap Scan Barcode to open the camera, align the code with the crosshair, then tap Scan. You can Accept the result, Try Again, or Enter Manually if it won’t decode.
- GPS — tap Capture to record your current coordinates.
- Compass — tap Start, hold the device flat and face-up, then tap Capture Heading once the needle steadies.
- Tilt Angle — tap Start, position the device on the surface, then tap Capture Angle.
- Address — fill in the structured address fields (line 1, city, postcode, etc.).
- Quote — add line items with a description, quantity, and unit price, and adjust the tax rate if needed. Subtotal and total update automatically.
- Calculation — read-only. Shows a live result based on a formula referencing other numeric fields in the report, updating as you fill them in.
See the Field Type Reference for full details on each type.
Repeatable sections
When a section is set to Repeatable, the report shows an Add button at the bottom of it. Tap it to add another instance — say, one per room inspected or one per defect found.
- Each instance has its own fields and can be filled in independently.
- Tap the instance name to rename it (e.g. “Bedroom 1”, “Defect — Cracked Skirting”).
- Tap the trash icon on an instance to remove it — the first instance can’t be deleted while it’s the only one left.
Any Calculation field that references a numeric field inside a repeatable section will automatically sum the values across all instances of that field. For example, a “Total Hours” calc field referencing “Hours” shows the running total across every instance, updating live as you fill in each row.
A Checkbox Summary field collects items from the whole report, including every instance of a repeatable section — any Checkbox + Text entry with text shows up in the summary, no matter which section it came from.
Report status
Set the report status before saving, to track where it sits in your workflow:
| Status |
Meaning |
| Draft |
Work in progress — not yet submitted |
| In Progress |
Actively being worked on |
| Completed |
Finished and ready to share |
| Archived |
Closed or no longer active |
The status shows on the History card and can be updated any time by reopening the report.
Saving a report
- Save — saves the report to history without generating a PDF.
- Save & Preview PDF — saves the report and opens the PDF preview screen, where you can review and share it.
Reports are saved to the local device database — no internet connection required.
History
The History tab lists all saved reports, most recent first. Use the search and filter bar to narrow by:
- Template name
- Status (Draft, In Progress, Completed, Archived)
- Date range
Tap a report card to reopen and edit it, or use the delete option on a card to permanently remove it.
